My interest in dairy goats began in the fall of 2010. With 4 young children, we quite literally go through 5 or more gallons of milk a week! I always wanted to buy organic milk, but the cast was double and that was just NOT in our budget. When one of my children seemed to be having some lactose problems and switched to lactose free milk I decided I had to look at what options we had!
Now, like most people I had heard that goat milk tastes weird, so I had never really considered goats as an option. We have no room or inclination to keep a cow, so I decided to look at goats again. When I read on one site, that the milk tastes normal, I was skeptical. After all, we’ve all heard that it tastes weird. Before we could move forward with anything we had to find a breeder with a doe in milk and go do a taste test. This took a bit of time, but we did eventually find someone and go have a test. I held that little shot glass of milk up, sure that this was going to taste funny, yet hoping it wouldn’t. I took that first tiny sip and was surprised that it really did taste normal! Yay! My youngest son kept asking for more and finished about 4 glasses. We were good to move forward.
We began building our goat shed and enclosure. When it was finished at the end of march we were happy to welcome home Phaedra and Luzee.
I have always tried to do things as naturally as possible, so we are planning to feed our goats on a grain mixture rather than pellets, with hay also of course. We add various herbs to suit the situation. We are also using an herbal wormer rather the traditional chemicals. Check out my links page for info on this food and wormer.
We are definitely still learning about goats, but if there is anything we can help with please contact us!
